Scoliosis correction exercises

Scolibalance

ScoliBalance is a physiotherapeutic scoliosis specific exercise (PSSE) program used to treat scoliosis and kyphosis in children, adolescents and adults.

The program combines the most relevant practices and principles in physical therapy, chiropractic and exercise rehabilitation for a 3D approach to managing scoliosis, tailored to each individual patient according to their curve type, symptoms and treatment goals.

The ScoliBalance concept was created by Dr Jeb McAviney (Chiropractor) drawing on his clinical experience treating scoliosis using a combination of Chiropractic Biophysics, SEAS and Schroth* (BSPTS) techniques.

The patient is taught to correct their curve, strengthen their spine in a corrected position and then shown how to incorporate this into their everyday lives.

ScoliBalance builds on the foundation of other PSSE programs focusing on aspects that are most effective and achievable for patients to learn and implement. The program is delivered in accordance with the SOSORT guidelines.

SEAS

SEAS (Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis) is an exercise program customised to each Scoliosis patient. As the name would suggest, the approach is based on continually changing recommendations based on the latest scientific research into the conservative management of Scoliosis.

When is SEAS used in the management of Scoliosis?

It can be used in the following situations:

  • As a stand-alone treatment in low-medium degree curves during growth to reduce the risk of bracing
  • As a conjunct to bracing in medium-high degree curves during growth to increase correction, prepare for weaning and reduce side effects
  • For adults either progressing or fused, to help stabilise the curve and reduce disability.

How does SEAS work?

The cornerstone of SEAS is teaching the patient their individualised Active Self Correction – an adopted posture which makes a 3D correction of the spine into the best possible alignment for that patient.

Different scientific papers, including a randomised controlled trial (2014) published over the past several years, have documented the efficacy of the SEAS approach applied in various phases of scoliosis treatment in reducing the progression of the scoliosis angle and the need to wear a brace.

The patient undergoes an initial assessment (approx. 1.5 hours) and thereafter periodic assessments and sessions lasting 45 mins each. The exercises are to be performed daily for 20 minutes for maximum benefit.
